What is the overlay?
The ELIXR overlay is a small window that displays the player list for your current instance. The player list includes tags for Patreon members, modified-client users, crashers, rippers, malicious users, suspicious activity, custom tags, and various fun tags.
Where does the information come from?
Our tagging information relies on several different systems. To start, we allow users to report other players for different purposes. Evidence is required before a tag is applied.
Manual tagging. Manual tagging is a significant part of the ELIXR tag system. ELIXR administrators and owners can apply tags or submit a form to the owners requesting that a tag be added to someone. This usually requires evidence. A tag may be revoked if ELIXR is contacted by the tagged user and the available information supports its removal.
Groups. Part of the ELIXR tagging system is based on VRChat groups. Administrators can associate a tag with a group link, causing members of that group to receive the tag at runtime. Although this may sound invasive, ELIXR does not scan the VRChat API to collect every user in that group. Group-based tags are determined at runtime; those users are not stored in our database, and no information about them is collected for this purpose.
FewTags. FewTags is a system that allows users of modified clients to customize nameplates in VRChat. Systems like this have existed for years and include many of the same types of tags that ELIXR displays. Showing these tags directly on VRChat nameplates would require hooking into the game and violating its Terms of Service. Instead, ELIXR uses the FewTags database to display the same tag information without requiring users to risk a ban.
Suspicious activity. Our background suspicious-activity detection system is explicitly opt-in only. It is not enabled in the tool by default because of the way its detection logic works. The system is one of a kind, and anyone who does not want to participate can avoid being evaluated by it. To protect the integrity of the system, we cannot publish its detection logic or a detailed description of it. In the interest of transparency, we can explain that it is an alert-based system and that, in most cases, human review is required before a tag is applied.
Why does it exist?
We understand the safety and privacy concerns of VRChat users, which is why we want the community to continue raising questions and sharing concerns about ELIXR.
The overlay was originally created to help people identify suspicious users without needing to learn every warning sign themselves. We did that work for you. With help from our experienced tagging team, nicknamed the Citadel, we can continue assisting in the never-ending effort against malicious modified-client use and file ripping.
